Who Is A Funeral Director And What He Does

The main job of a funeral director is to take care of everything from the pre burial or pre cremation rituals.

The essential tasks of a funeral director include shifting the deceased to a mortuary, making the body ready for the memorial service, making preparations for the services where people will remember and pay their final respects to the departed, and carrying out the ultimate procedures on the body.

These duties encompass a wide variety of tasks, including arrangement of hearse for transporting the body, deliberation on the venue and timings for memorial service and also publishing obituaries in the local media and in the newspapers. Further, funeral directors have to make arrangements for flowers and have the decoration done for each service, make provisions for conveyance for the assembled people and clothe the deceased for the ceremony after embalming it.

Apart from these jobs, a funeral director is also entrusted with the task of doing the essential paperwork formalities required following a person’s death. He assists the relatives in obtaining a death certificate. He also makes preparations to settle any claims of insurance, and helps the family in applying for veterans’ burial benefits. He also aids in transferring pension and annuity money, if any, of the deceased person to the dependants of the deceased and assists the family in assessing the costs of the whole funeral service.

Moreover, a funeral director has to liaise with a wide range of people so that he can do his tasks in a proper way. He has to associate with physicians, priests, casket makers and flower sellers, all with equal ease.

Finally, it is essential for funeral directors to give some extra time and provide comfort and solace to the bereaved family of the deceased, in order to help them tide over their grief. Though it is a crucial aspect of the profession, a few funeral directors tend to ignore it as a peripheral responsibility.
