These were considered offerings to the gods who had brought them success. Actually the origin of the term trophy lies in the Greek word for defeat - ‘tropaion’.
Romans, on the other hand, had their unique version of trophies. They used huge pillars and stands which would hold the sculpted trophy aloft for the entire world to see and admire. After sometime, the kings and monarchs started distributing chalices to the best athletes in the kingdom.
