Save Energy In Your Apartment
Society’s trend of “going green,” is happening
all over the nation. Luckily, there are several things you can do as
well - starting with your living space. Not only will you do
your part to save the environment, but you’ll save yourself
energy and money along the way. Ideally, your heating and cooling
bills will go down, you’ll enjoy a healthier lifestyle, and
much more.
Efficiency is the key. Look around your apartment and follow these simple steps to get started being “green”:
Change your light bulbs - Replace all old incandescent bulbs to low-energy bulbs, these can be expensive but it lasts longer and much brighter. Do the same thing when decorating your apartment patio with lights. LED (Light emitting diodes) works great, just swap out your old string of lights.
Natural lighting - Use natural lighting when there is a chance. Use blinds instead of flipping the switch on every time you enter a room. During colder months, these blinds can also be used to keep warm air inside. If you must use lights, use low-energy bulbs and turn them off every time you leave the room.
Thermostat - You can save energy and money over a years’ time by switching your thermostat a few degrees warmer or cooler. Wear sweatshirt in the winter to keep you warm while inside. Open your windows when it’s feasible, to let cool wind inside when its summer. This way, you’ll save anywhere from 1 to 3% of your monthly bill.
Unplug appliances - People don’t seems to notice that plugged cell phone charger, toaster and blender can be a waste of energy. Consider unplugging these devices when not in use.
Turn off your computer - Turning it off when not in use is a great way to save much needed energy. Enabling your computer’s energy saving configuration can greatly affect your electric bill. Choosing the right PSU (Power supply unit) with an 80% plus rating improves the efficiency of your computers. Avoid single core processor with very high clock speed, they tend to generate more heat and requires more power to operate.
Washer and dryer - If you’re a person who’s lucky
enough to have a washer and dryer in your apartment, be sure to use
the “cold” setting. Clothes will come out just as clean
as if you use warm water - and you’ll save money on your
heating bill. Be mindful of the load size as well. Overfilling the
washer will require you to run your dryer several times to make sure
the clothes are completely dry.
Keep in mind these tips to make your apartment just a little bit
“greener.” Even using just one or two of these tips will
save you money and energy throughout the year.
