Remembering Our Loved Ones Who Passed Away

We grieve as instinctive reaction to loss. It is the pain that you feel when someone who or something that is part of your life, someone or something you cherish, is no longer there.

Some samples of situations that are cause for sorrow are the following:

- you have broken up with your girlfriend or boyfriend - you lost your job - you lost that one chance to pursue what you love doing the most - a loved one is diagnosed with a serious disease - you are diagnosed with a serious illness - the breakup of a marriage - you had a falling out with your best friend - your pet died - a loved one passed away suddenly

All these instances can make us grieve. Nevertheless, the most concentrated pain that we feel is when someone we love - such as a spouse, a son or daughter, or a mother or father- dies. Nothing will be able to close the emptiness that suddenly springs up in our life when our loved ones die.

These special individuals may have been all there ever was to us. And our lives would never be the same again without them. We feel the sorrow for what has been taken from us. Nevertheless, it is in grieving that we cultivate the way to our own healing of the anguish that we felt with our beloved’s death.

There is no correct or incorrect way to grieve. Nonetheless, we must choose the path that encourages us to heal after all the loss that we suffered.

Grieving is often equated with all-out crying each time the memory of a loved one crosses our mind. Tears are not the only indicators of grief. One can look unemotional on the outside yet suffer from the pain of loss within.

Grieving does not have a time limit, such as the “recommended” duration of just one year. Grieving’s duration differs from individual to individual. No one can rush and quickly “get over” the grieving process. Time is a remarkable healer.
