New Carpet Installation - Find Top Tips Here
Nowadays, getting professional help could be really expensive so we try to do different tasks on our own, specially when it comes to home improvement. One home improvement task we can try doing ourselves is installing carpets.
Below are lists of materials and tools you will be needing, and basic instructions about installing carpets.
Here are the materials you will need:
Carpet
Nails
Screws
Carpet pad
You will also be needing these tools:
Hammer
Tack strip cutter
Knee kicker
Trimmer
Power stretcher
Staple gun
Carpet seam tape
Carpet knife
Before starting the project you have to make sure all the materials and tools needed are complete. Use these basic instructions for carpet installation.
Measure the room - Prior to other preparations measure the room you will be carpeting. You have to measure the length and the width of the room as this is important to determine the size of the carpet you will be needing.
Prepare the floor - Clean your floor before beginning. Ensure that the floor is undamaged by checking for squeaks. You will have to repair any damaged areas you find. You do not want to ignore areas such as these; they will be hazardous to your carpet if you do not ensure they are fixed.
Install tack strips - Place tack strips parallel to wall edges. Do not install them in front of door openings. You have to maintain about 1/4″ space between the walls or baseboard and the tack strips.
Install the carpet pad - Important for making the carpet comfortable to walk on, a carpet pad also helps protect the carpet. Starting along one wall, roll out your carpet pad or carpet cushion. You have to make sure that you overlap the tack strips a few inches. Keep the padding straight and smooth. You can tape the seams in order to avoid bunching. Staple the pad thoroughly every 2 feet or so. After the whole thing is secure cut the extra padding along the tack strips with a carpet knife. Your pad should not overlap the tack strips.
Install the carpet - Give yourself an extra 3-4 inches so that it overlaps the wall, install the carpet the same way you did the pad. If you need to use more than one section a seam must be created. Use seam tape placed under the seam for this effect. A steam iron may be used to melt the adhesive on the seam tape and fasten the carpet ends to it.
Tack the carpet down and trim - Don’t trim the ends of the carpet before you have tacked it into the space left between the tack strip and baseboard. Use the knee kicker to install the carpet to the tack strip. The carpet can be stretched over the tack strips using a power stretcher. Use your carpet trimmer to trim the carpet overlapping the wall. Tuck the carpet at the edges using your stair tool. You can’t neglect the doorways; prevent fraying by installing door edge strips.
As soon as the carpet has been installed, you must vacuum it.
Follow certain steps in order to make carpet installation easy and fun. You have to use the right materials and the appropriate tools to achieve the result you are looking for.
