Minnesota Twins to Play Without Morneau
The Minnesota Twins’ fading playoff chances took another hit on Tuesday when it was revealed that All-Star first baseman Justin Morneau will be sidelined the rest of the season.
Morneau has been fighting back pain for weeks, although a CT scan as well as an MRI on Monday acknowledged that he has a crack in his lower back.
The condition shouldn’t figure to require surgery. Physicians have told Morneau to relax the back for the coming 3 month|fall season.
Morneau wounded himself on a diving slide into 1st base on Friday and hasn’t played ever since.
Before this past week’s incident, the slugging 1st baseman had already been playing through pain off and on for a good deal of time. Therefore, his stats have declined mightily; Morneau was batting just .077 in September to descend his season batting average to .274. Prior to this dip, he was hitting above the .300 figure. Having gotten only nine hits over a duration of 22 games, it was obvious that something was amiss.
“You could play through the pain if you feel like you are helping the franchise or doing something to help your teammates out and win games,” Morneau insisted. “When you go out there and you don’t feel as if you are helping anyone, that is when you kind of take a step back and say, ‘All right, perhaps I’m doing more damage than good.’ ”
Despite his troubles lately, Morneau finishes the 2009 campaign with 30 home runs and 100 runs batted in. The home run output is higher than his ‘08 total of 23.
Michael Cuddyer figures to become the primary 1st baseman in Morneau’s lack.
Despite the condition, Morneau remains optimistic about the Twins’ opportunities the rest of the year.
“Hopefully I’ll watch the fellows go on a run here and play cheerleader and that’s,” Morneau claimed.
