How Does A Transformer Works ?
You must have observed a box type device located in many of the house hold devices such as television sets, ceiling fans, electric motors and in almost every appliance. These are generally the transformers that transfer electric energy from one circuit to another inductively coupled capacitors.
Transformers are electrical devices and work on the principle of mutual inductance. According to mutual inductance, when a current in the conductor varies, generates some magnetic field. This in turn generates changing current in the another coil that is placed close to the conductor. Here the current carrying conductor is known as primary winding, whereas the coil in which the current is induced is considered as secondary winding.
There is a long list of advantages that a transformer offers. Some of them are listed as under. When electricity is generated at the power station, the voltage is very high which can’t used for commercial purposes. Hence, step down transformers lower the voltage and is then distributed to you.
While, the electricity that is used in residential areas is stepped down using a step down transformer, step up transformers are used in big companies and firms where a power is needed.
Another area where transformers are extensively used, is your daily household electronic products such as microphones, record players and your telephone sets. Telephone circuits that carry two way conversation over single cables is made possible using an audio transformer.
Signal and audio transformers find applications to couple the stages of amplifiers in devices such as microphones and record players.
