Let’s face it, people like to be recognized for doing a good job, so it is a great idea for your company to have an employee recognition program. These programs come in many forms and with various policies for their implementation.
Recognizing your employees can inspire loyalty and help your company to meet its goals. When businesses that had overlooked this in the past, go ahead and implement a recognition program, what often, quickly follows, is a dramatic increase in overall job performance & worker morale.
Recognition awards may be structured and expected, as in, employee of the month; but if you do not include random awards that are totally unexpected, you will probably devalue the regular awards. When a company provides unexpected, random awards, all the awards are viewed as important, as opposed to, just something the company thinks it has to do. And, when employees discover that a particular project performance or good week may generate recognition, productivity tends to skyrocket.
If a manager is always awarding the same few people it can be perceived as favoritism, even if the same few employees are actually the ones who deserve it. One solution is, when an employee who has never won a regular monthly or quarterly award does a good job on a particular project, giving her a random award could be just the thing that motivates her to continue the great work, and catapult her to become more consistent.
You could also allow employees to vote, and you may want to accept input from customers, by giving discounts for filling out surveys. Some companies allow the employees to vote for awards for the management. And some awards, are like hockey’s Stanley Cup, and held for just a certain amount of time. Then the current holder decides who the next holder will be and presents it to her (telling, why) at the next monthly or weekly meeting.
