Adults have grown to depend on calculators to do all of our adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Since we rarely do any calculations in our own heads, our math skills are likely lacking. Even the easiest math will prove challenging if you are out of practice.

We rely on calculators to prepare our monthly budgets, reconcile our checking accounts, and do routine calculations. When we put together spreadsheets, there is no need for us to make sure our figures are correct, as most of these programs perform automatic calculations.

As your skills significantly improve you need to challenge yourself to do more of the math in your head and this helps in improving concentration. This is more difficult but as you work at it you will find that you are able to do it in no time at all. You will be able to quickly determine how much of the bill is yours as well as how much of a tip you should leave based upon your balance that is owed.

You may need additional time for manual and mental calculations when you first start doing it that way again. If this is something you do frequently throughout the day, you may find the process somewhat aggravating. Over time, however, you will have an unexpected feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment as you progress in improving concentration.

You must exercise sufficient discipline to avoid using a calculator until you have made every effort to solve the problem yourself. Once you have manually calculated a number, you can then use your calculator for confirmation. You will receive the maximum benefit from this exercise by continually challenging yourself with more difficult problems to solve mentally or manually. The best philosophy to have where our mental function is concerned is “use it or lose it”.
